Susan Rhodemyre Willmot
is a former editor of The Thoroughbred Record and is an award-winning writer in both Canada and the US. Most recently, Susan’s creative non-fiction piece, Liberty Hill received an honourable mention in the 2023 Penned Writer’s annual showcase in Kentucky Monthly magazine.
Her work also has appeared in Sports Illustrated, Kentucky Derby (official souvenir magazine of the 122nd running), and The Backstretch. She immigrated to Canada in 1984 where she was an Associate editor of the Canadian Thoroughbred and is a freelance writer, farm administrator, and mother to two sons, one who is now President of Kinghaven Farms. Susan loves travel, photography and making books of her travels. She lives with her husband on Kinghaven Farms in King Township, Ontario.
In May 2022, Susan graduated from King’s College, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, receiving a Master of Fine Arts, Creative Non-Fiction. Currently, she is working on her book, Lexington: A Blind Stallion Who Carried the Hopes, Dreams, and Shame of an Era, told through the life of champion Lexington, his owner, R. A. Alexander and the enslaved people of Woodburn Stud. Every cultural economic and human metric—racism, economic disparity, loyalty to family and place—was in motion then, as it is now. The past is the problem; the past is the present.
